Víkurskarð (315 m) was the main route between Akureyri and the northeast before Vaðlaheiðargöng opened in 2018, and now serves as the toll-free alternative when the tunnel closes. The Akureyri-side descent is steep and winding; in snow it is the first road in the area to close. If the forecast is bad and you are trying to save the tunnel toll, go mid-morning — not in the evening.
