The pass climbs to 540 m between Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður and is often the last bad section before Akureyri in winter. In strong northerlies, the south side closes first — the Hörgárdalur observation is the leading indicator, more so than overall visibility. Take the descent into Öxnadalur seriously; it is steeper than it looks on the map.
