The tunnel is 7.6 km long and tolled — ISK 1,700 for a passenger car (more without a subscription). It shortens the Akureyri–Egilsstaðir drive by about 30 minutes versus the old Víkurskarð pass, which stays open and toll-free as a backup when the tunnel closes for maintenance. Set up a subscription if you drive it often — the per-trip rate jumps without one.
