Kjölur (F35) is one of the few highland routes you do not strictly need a 4×4 for, but it is open only from late June to late September and closed every other month. It is a gravel road at 650 m with no fuel along the way, patchy-to-nonexistent mobile coverage, and two river fords that rise fast in rain. Check Vegagerðin for the annual opening date; last year's experience is not a guide.
