At 407 m, Holtavörðuheiði is the first serious winter-weather test on the Ring Road north of Borgarnes — it closes routinely when southwesterlies drift snow across the lanes. The Staðarskáli road-station is the leading indicator: if it is red, the heath is gone. In summer it is an easy, long, open road; in winter it ranks among the hardest stretches in the country for HGVs.
