Þrengslin (Route 39) is a lower pass (240 m) often used as an alternative to Hellisheiði when the main route gets windy. The road is narrower and more exposed, so when both wind AND snow are forecast, Hellisheiði is usually the safer option — it is better maintained. Use Þrengslin as a milder weather alternative, not as a rescue route when the Ring Road is already closed.
